The practice of aerial surveillance emerged in the 1898 Spanish–American War, when the US military fitted a camera to a kite, producing one of the first aerial reconnaissance photographs. Later, in 1943, the German military debuted the FX-1400, or the "Fritz X," a 2300-pound bomb with four small wings and a radio controller. A breakthrough for guided aerial weapons, it was also the first remotely controlled munition put into operational use.
