The state-of-the-art UAE VR (virtual reality) app was introduced at the 2015 UAE Government Summit by the country’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). The app was demonstrated to a packed room of renowned guests such as HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Klaus Schwab (World Economic Forum’s Founder & Executive Chairman), Hwang Woo-Yea, Kevin Kelly (Founding Executive Editor of Wired magazine), and Dr. Erik Brynjolfsson.

The mobile virtual reality project was part of the UAE Smart Government initiative—a smart step to provide corporates as well as citizens with various direct public and core services online. The app was developed in collaboration with the talented team at Merlin Digital, utilizing their expertise in 360-degree solutions.

The UAE VR app lets users experience the country’s cultural heritage and various sights and attraction through smartphones. The app can be interacted with using smartphone’s gyroscope or any virtual reality headsets such as Google Cardboard, Merlin’s Immersive 3D VR Glasses, or Samsung Gear VR. The first version of the app has a grand virtual tour of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center, UAE’s biggest mosque.

The app features a guided tour with audio commentary in both English and Arabic, allows users to virtually navigate through the mosque, and interact with information hotspots. Moreover, the app offers an exclusive virtual 360 degree tour of the mosque’s library, which is considered to be UAE’s first inside a mosque.
