What is Popcorn Time?

Popcorn Time is a multi-platform, open-source project by a community of developers to make the experience of watching torrent movies as simple as possible. To put it simply, Popcorn Time, which has been developed for Windows, MAC OSX, Linux, and Android, is a BitTorrent client that allows you to stream latest movies and TV shows straight to your device without the need for downloading any torrent files. It’s as simple as click and play. The multi-platform software has been localized into 44 languages by contributors.

How does it work?

Popcorn Time works using torrents. It’s a bit like YouTube, where movies and TV shows are downloaded and buffered as you watch them. The Popcorn Time interface presents thumbnails and film titles in a manner similar to Netflix. When a user clicks on one of the titles, the film is downloaded via the BitTorrent protocol. However, in the case of Popcorn Time, whatever you watch is being downloaded and uploaded at the same time. Popcorn Time seeds the torrent to others in the BitTorrent swarm.

How useful is it?

The possibility of watching movies without having to download anything in itself is a novel concept. The possibilities to this are endless. Imagine watching movies and TV shows on your Smart TV in just a few simple clicks. Get an Android mini-PC such as Merlin’ Smart TV Enhancer, which comes preinstalled with Popcorn Time, to enjoy HD movies and TV shows directly on your TV.
